After reading Unit 6: Chapter 2 of Urban Reader for College Writers, answer these questions:
1. The average (as in not wealthy) student in America either recieves a scholarship or goes deeply in debt when they go to school past high school. How do students in your native country or a country you've visited pay for college or other parts of their education?
2. This chapter's reading suggests that parents should continue to help their children financially even after college graduation. Do you agree?
3. Should college students have access to credit card applications if they don't have a job? Explain why or why not.
You must post a comment answering these questions by noon Sunday, November 18. And you should reply to another student's post by class on Monday.

ReplyDelete1) In my country, the government colleges have very small fee; i would say around $10 a month. but if you want to study in a private colleges you have to pay a lot of money.
ReplyDelete2) i strongly agree with it, because i personally feel that when i am going finish my education ( approximately after 9 years), i will definitely need my parents help. they have to watch my back for at least 6 months.
3) As a college student, i would say they should have access to credit card application; because if they dont get help from anyone, how they are going to survive.
What if student used a lot of money?? then how they can pay back?? I think it will be bad impact to student's future life. :)
DeleteI wish I went to school in your country, Arafat, as it sounds very affordable! You have a good point about students needing as much financial help as they can get, whether it be from parents or credit cards.
Delete1.In my native country, people have to pay high tuition fee when they are college students.
ReplyDelete2.I agree that parents should help their children financially even after college graduationg. If college students work and study together, they will have much pressure. It will influence their education.
3.College students should have access to credit card applications if they don't have a job. They can focus on their studying and get better grades .It will help them get a better job in the future.
It's a good point that if students have access to money, they may spend less time worring about that and more time focusing on their studies.
Delete1. In my native country, if it is private high school, then we pay just a little bit but if the student's family has unstable financial status then they don't need to pay. By the way, in my country, we pay a lot of money to public and private college.(But, lee then America.)
ReplyDelete2. This chapter's reading suggests that parents should continue to help their children financially even after college graduation. Do you agree? I disagree. Actually, I think it depend on their financial status. If they have unstable financial status, then they don't need to help their children financially even after college graduation.
3. I think it depend on their family's financial status. First of all, if student's family has unstable financial status, then they shouldn't have access to credit card because if they use a lot of money as much as they can't handle then they will fall into a lot of debt. Then they will have more unstable financial status. Also, it will be bad impact to their future, like taking job. But if student or student's family have stable financial status, then I think it is fine to student get access to credit card. (In addition, I think bank or government should make a limitation to student's credit card depend on their and their family's financial status.)
There is a link for student to get a credit card and their family financial status?i don't thing so..because if their family has a better financial status why are they going to let they children get a credit that they going to pay back while they can automatically help them?.....
DeleteGood points, Natalie. It is a shame when people begin their lives outside of school in incredible debt because of poor money management.
Delete1.In my native country, college education is free unless if your parents want to sent you in private colleges which are really expensive. They government also gives some money to college students to help them buy their college supplies.
ReplyDelete2.In one hand, parents should financially help their children after they graduate and could not find a job.they will definitely need their parents support. In the other hand,if you get a job while you graduate from college ,you should be the one to take care of them as they did since you were child.
3.I think college students could have access to credit if they don't receive any federal aid and don't have any other support, because they will need money for everything in college.I think they can pay back after they graduate from college.
At point two, i agree with you, but point three i see that the credit can't be as good solution, if student didn't receive federl aid, because if the student get a job after their graduation, they will find themselve that have to pay many charges for many years. and if they didn't got job that can be worst.
DeleteI agree, Aminata, that sometimes families don't need to take care of the student, but the other way around, depending on the situation. Sometimes families are very poor, but a student out of college might begin making a lot of money and be able to help their family out.
Delete1-In my country the goverment pay college for the students and get some money from the goverment monthly without paying it back.
ReplyDelete2-I dont think college should have acceses to credit card applicatin if they dont have job, because credit card means borrowing money and paying it back with certain interest,so if you borrow money from the bank and spend it and dont have a ressource how you going to pay that money.
3-I think its depend of the situation of the parents ,but after college gradiation you should be able to found a job and take care of youself finencialy, you dont suppose to be a charge of your parents anymore.
Your first point sounds very convenient and like a very good system.
Delete1) My country has a totally different system. Students Pay for High Schools, but public colleges are free. In matter of fact, students receive money every three months when they go to college; it's very little, but it can cover their transportation for a month. Most of the people go to private colleges, for those who want a good degree. Also, in both public and private colleges, students have to pay after their 4th year of college for further studies.
ReplyDelete2) I don't think that parents should help their children after college. Most of college students work during their college years, so they should know how to manage their money according to their situation, they should learn to be on their own, otherwise they will relay on their parents for a long time, and I don't think that's part of growing up and moving on in life.
3)I think college students should have access to credit card applications, but it should be a very limited amount, because they are still young, and some of them don't even read the contract, so they are not aware of the consequences of being in a debt. Also in they borrow a lot if money, where would they get if from? most of them won't pay it, which will effect them badly in the future.
i have an disagreement with 3rd answer. if the students dont have a job how would they afford a credit card? they couldn't pay their bills on time so after a year they will be stuck with it and their credit scores will go down.
DeleteI agree with your second one, the students should be independence from parents after graduate college, and know how to manage their money. If they are dependent on their parents, they will never grow up.
DeleteI think you have good points here. I think it's a good idea to encourage college students to be as independent as possible when they attend college so that they can become adults.
Deletein my native government pay only for two year collage after that you have to pay your own money. There is also private collage mostly peolpe go to private collages beacuse study is much better then other collages.
ReplyDeleteI think parents should support their children until they get a job, beacuse they have a hard time to get a job and also they have a lot of responsibilities to settle down after get a collage degree.
And what do you think about credit cards for students? Especially those without jobs?
DeleteIn my country there is something different than what we have in USA, because the government pay each three month an amount of money just for students who are taken university, and if their familly poor and they couldn't support their children. an other hand, for colleges and high school is free.
ReplyDeleteI agrre that parents have to help financialy their children even after college graduation, until they have job or any financial source, therefore to maintain relationship of society. I am totaly disagree that the students can have acces of any credit, because as we know most of them they are still tenagers, and they can't controle themselves for spending these money on the right way.
I agree that many students can't control their impulses when they are first beginning college, and so a credit card might be dangerous for them and their financial situation.
Delete1. In my native country there are private/public high-schools and colleges. Parents mostly send their children to private schools because they have better staff and also because public schools are pretty dangerous even for the teachers. The government offers a few scholarships, but its not much what they offer.
ReplyDelete2. I totally disagree with the idea of parents helping their children financially after college. Kids nowadays are used to be spoiled, which in my opinion make them lazier and they will never try to get a job while being taken care of. Parents should let their children be on their own so they can feel the pressure and become mature while they do.
3. I don't think this is a good idea because all they will want to do is buy and they wont have the money to pay back which will create them a deep debt and ruin their credit in the future. But, if you have a job you can make ends meet so, unless you don't know how to handle your money i think you'll be good with a credit card.
i disagree with number 3,
Deleteits not like they wont able to find a job;they are qualified. they will surely find a job.
so its undoubtably impossible to become a bankrupt.

DeleteI agree that some students, though not all, may find themselves less motivated to work hard and find a job if they recieve too much unconditional support from their family.

ReplyDelete1. In my country, students do not pay as much as we pay here for the college. they pay around $30 for the whole semester.
ReplyDelete2. yes i think they should because students are not yet capable to earn money to provide for their needs, so later on when students get job they can help their parents back.
3. of course they shouldn't. that will be one of the biggest mistake they will ever make because the credit cards will lead them to purchase things that they cant afford and after a year they will have to pay a huge amount of debt, when they will be unable to pay the debt they have to regret for it and seek for solutions from their parents.
You're right that one of the biggest problems with credit cards, for students and adults, is that it encourages them to buy more than what they can afford, which can lead to debt.
DeleteAs i'm working on my bachelors degree, the idea of the students loan scare me a little bit,but with my parents help as of now i'm not worry about taking loan only i have the responsibility of managing my monthly allowance like rent, food, clothing, phone bills. When i graduate from college,i will have a lot of experiences to handle my own bills.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear it! What do you think, in general, about students with credit cards but no jobs?
Delete1) In my native country, students have to pay a high tuition fee and most students get tuition from their parents.
ReplyDelete2) I do not agree with that because parents have their own pressure, and parents should have to pay other thing and save money when they are retired. When students graducate from college, they should find a job or while they are in the college they should have a part time job to decline pressure from parents.
3) Some average students should get access to credit card applications because they should get some help from somewhere, to do that students can get education first and serve country。
It's true, not every parent has a secure financial stuation, and expecting them to pay for their children as well can make things worse for them. Credit cards would be a way for a student to get some extra money without putting any more stress on their family.
DeleteTo introduce everything, the system education that American people uses is way-better than what they are using in my native country.
ReplyDelete1. In the country where i was born if you don't have money you have to go to publics school but you still have to pay some types of money. Therefore if your parent can pay your school they will have to pay a lot of money, that was for high school. For that no needs to talk about college reason why some people in my country just finish with they high school in stay without going to college. college's fee it's really expensive in my native country.
2. Children will always needs their parent help even if they are graduate student. A graduate student does not mean the student is rich or have money to take care of themselves. Has a good parent, even if their child is working they still owns them support.
3. Having access to a credit card while you not working it's not a good for a college student with no job and who don't even know how to fill a job application. I don't need to tell you how bad it will be after this student used all of that money who's going to pay it. Has i said your parents supposes to stand with you all the way but it's not on this condition a credit card it's for people who work and get pay every week but not for student with no job.
Good points, Wickny. I think it's true that, until the student has a secure job, they may always need their parents' help.
Delete1. In my native country, student dont have to pay until high school.
ReplyDelete2. I think parent should support their children until they found a job, because before their children get a job they dont have any income to support themselve.
3. students shouldn't have access to credit card applications if they don't have a job, because its not a good idea that they learn to spend money before learn to earn money.
